Used mobility aids and adjustable beds given to Brimbank residents in need

February 14th, 2012
The Rotary Club of Keilor along with numerous other Rotary clubs is working to provide disabled and elderly individuals access to used mobility aids and equipment. Residents of Brimbank that suffer with various disabilities will be able to benefit with the program that will give access to used disability equipment that is given to the person in need. Most of the disability aids have been donated to the Rotary club by people and organizations that do not need adjustable beds, recliners, wheelchairs, shower chairs, walkers and related items. All of the aids including adjustable beds are checked and cleaned before being handed out. Norm Draper, the Keilor club president said: “There is always a need to have more equipment for people who cannot buy the expensive adjustable beds, manual wheelchairs or even shower chairs. The need for such equipment is always there for elderly and disabled all across the Moonee Valley and Brimbank.” He added: “We met with numerous service providers and came to know that people come to them as they struggle with getting access to disability aids and adjustable beds that are much needed for living as independently as possible.” “Usually we send the used equipment abroad and now that we have seen the local requirement, we will be focusing on the people that have been left behind but require the assistance.” “We have adjustable beds, wheelchairs and walkers amidst other things. But the requirement of the mobility equipment needs to be endorsed by a disability service provider, health and aged care provider. We encourage people to donate the mobility items that were being used for a family member who passed away. Someone can always use it.”

Sleep deprivation affects doctors during medical procedures, but adjustable beds are the answer.

January 11th, 2012
Surgeons and physicians suffering from sleep deprivation can find the quality of work decreasing as per the latest findings of the University of California. The research team looked at the quality of procedures and standards that have led to complications before and after rules were introduced. Before 2003, there were no standards and after new rules were implemented, there were specific number of hours that medical professionals could work on. In the study, some of the operations that were referred to happened prior to 2003 and the rest took place after that year. Dr Christian De Virgilio said: “Better sleep led to better results. We were suspecting that the outcome of the operations would have been the same but it was surprising that the outcomes were different and improved.” Adjustable beds are known to provide the right comfort and position that can help people with sleep disorders and ensure less stress enabling better sleep. With a variety of adjustable bed manufacturers presenting arrange of styles and sizes, slumber is easy to come now. Most people are prescribed these beds when they suffer with a sleep disorder. The study was completed and the conclusion that was derived included the results were due to sleep deprivation. The sleep deprivation was due to overwork and long hours at health care centers or hospitals. This did have an impact on the quality of procedures. This research was published in the Journal of the American Medical Association and another study has showed that police officers suffered from sleep deprivation.

Better sleep with adjustable beds is the ‘key to good health in 2012’.

January 11th, 2012
Realizing the importance of a good night’s sleep, adjustable beds are in focus again. Most of the people are now realizing the importance of shut eye and it has become the priority in 2012. However, with an increase in sleep disorders, being able to sleep properly is a sought after especially in 2012. Most of the health care practitioners recommend an adjustable bed to ensure that people have a good night’s sleep and rest. As per the new research conducted by the Values Institute at DGWB in California, it revealed the theme of the decade seems to be sleep; just the way diet and health were in vogue in 1990s. The study showed that there is evidence between poor sleep patterns and insufficient slumber which has made many people look at other aspects of better sleep. The adjustable beds have features such as vibration, massage, and flexible positions that ensure that the body is at complete rest evoking deep slumber even for those with sleep disorders. This is one of the reasons that adjustable beds are helpful for people with spinal disorders, disabilities and injuries. According to Dr. P. Adjustable beds can eliminate sleep disorders ‘usually common among police officers.”

January 11th, 2012
The overly stressed police are one of the candidates of sleep disorders. The constant stress so the job has made the forces suffer with sleep issues which may not be overcome with just going to bed on time, every night. According to a new research published in the Journal of American Medical Association has come up with results that have shown the police forces in Canada, US and UK are succumbing to sleep disorders. Insomnia and sleep apnea are the common ailments affecting the individuals and one of the most commonly prescribed beds is the adjustable bed. “Most police officers suffer the stresses of everyday work and in an environment where the stress constantly builds up, are reflected as poor sleep patterns, hypertension and other ailments. At University of Pennsylvania, Center for Sleep and Circadian Neurobiology, Dr Michael Grandner said: “In a profession where valor and bravery is the norm and any weakness is discouraged, police officers are under social pressure to ignore sleep related problems. But this can have devastating consequences as they can be a risk to their own safety and that of the others.” For a peaceful slumber, having proper bed and bedding is essential. Adjustable beds can fulfill those criteria as they have extra support mattress and variable positions for the head and the feet. Though experts stress on regular bedtime, no alcohol before sleep and early meals, sleep apnea is one of the most common disorders affecting both men and women. Another sleep expert said: “Adjustable beds can ensure good sleep and proper breathing due to the uplifted head positions that can be adjusted as per requirement.”

Regular sleep schedule and adjustable beds – a must for good sleep

December 19th, 2011
Christmas dinners, New Year parties are all the good reasons for which people like to stay up late. Staying up late once in a while is fine, but a regular sleep schedule should be maintained for getting proper rest for the mind and body. It has also been suggested that sleeping and waking up at the same time each day helps people get good quality sleep. The question that arises is how to maintain a sleep pattern and to keep it on track at all times? Ms Lisa Artis, the spokesperson for Sleep Council explains “One can program their body by sleeping and waking up at roughly the same hour, each day. This not only helps in maintain the sleep schedule but in getting proper sleep each day. Using adjustable beds with different features can help sleep better.” The other important thing to take care of is to avoid all stimulants for keeping yourself awake and alert when you have not slept well in the night. These substances such as caffeine, tea, coffee, hurt more than they help and affect your sleep cycle negatively a lot. They reduce your ability to go to sleep well each night, thereby disrupting your sleep schedule further. Research that was recently published in the European Journal of Nutrition that people’s sleep is actually affected by the food and drinks that they consume. This research was carried out by an international team of researchers at the Northumbria University and they say that tart cherry juice is best for getting a good slumber. Ms Artis also says that although sleeping on time each day is important, avoiding all stimulants is essential too. A hot milky drink is helpful. But most important is that if you still cannot fall asleep, there is no point lying in bed and getting worried about it. The best thing is to get up and do something that shall distract your mind from it. Adjustable beds can help those with physical pains that obstructs good sleep.”

Quality of sleep at night boost by regular resting and using adjustable beds

December 19th, 2011
The Sleep Council’s spokesperson, Lisa Artis explained that sticking to a regular pattern of sleep goes a long way in improving the quality of sleep at night. She also explained that the most important thing for better quality sleep is to decide on a bedtime for yourself and sticking to it as often as possible. A regular schedule is even better than an early lie-in or going to bed early on some days. Ms Artis said “Sticking to a sleep and wake-up schedule each day gets the body programmed to sleep better.Substances that stimulate the mind and body such as caffeine, cola, tea should not be consumed by people who wish to improve their quality of sleep." "They should also be avoided if people want their body in a good condition for good quality sleep at night. I think that it is best if these substances can be avoided all day through to overcome the missed hours of sleep in case one has to sleep late and get up early. Too many stimulants result in a poor night and this gets into a vicious cycle. Using quality adjustable beds or good mattresses will make sure that you sleep well and it results in deep sleep through the night. " Later Lisa Artis said: “These stimulants interfere with the sleep cycle and prevent falling asleep resulting in poor sleep. A glass of hot milky drink instead or an herbal drink. Moreover, if you still cannot fall asleep, there is nothing to worry about it and one should not continue to keep lying down wondering why they are unable to sleep. With flexible positions and massage options, adjustable beds have been medically proven to help individuals sleep better.”

To fight sleep disorders and lack of sleep, use adjustable beds.

December 05th, 2011
Research claims that lack of sleeps can have dire consequences on the complete mind and body. People who plan to stay up late for work or fun or any other reason are warned about these consequences. Sleep expert Lisa Shives at CNN that this time of the year is most dangerous because consumers stay up late for Christmas shopping and miss out on the much needed sleep. This leads to reduction in alertness, cognitive abilities and can lead to more accidents. Using better beds or adjustable beds makes for a comfortable sleep patterns. More doctors recommended using adjustable beds as it ensures comfortable and flexible positions for sleeping. This can be seen in a similar light especially at Black Friday, a very busy shopping time in USA that marks the beginning of many sales. The sales and deals on this day tempt a large mass of consumers to stay up late at times all through the night to get the best bargains and deals. Lisa Shives also claims that lack of sleep firstly results in grumpiness, feeling low and irritable. As moods worsen, it leads to more road rage and fights. Not enough sleep will then affect metabolism in the person, making them feeling sick and nauseated. Last but not the least, it affects the ability to react, think and take decisions. Lack of cognitive abilities makes people take the wrong decisions and can be dangerous while the person is driving. Dr. Mike, who writes for MyFox Philedelphia, has observed that more women in general suffer from sleep disorders such as insomnia and sleep apnoea. This leads to more women suffering from the effects of lack of sleep. They should take in effective steps to get proper sleep, specially using adjustable beds, taking a meal at least four hours before sleeping and reducing TV time before sleeping. Those with severe sleep disorders should take professional advice and try out the wide range of adjustable beds to get maximum comfort to be able to sleep properly.

How Adjustable Beds Increase Quality of Life

March 29th, 2011

According to an old proverb,”health is wealth” and a sound sleep is one of the major driving factors for sound health. According to doctors, those who enjoy a sound sleep on a regular basis generally enjoy a greater level of health.

The problem is, as people get older their sleep can be disturbed, either by illness, medical conditions or simply due to posture problems when lying on a bed. Normal / flat beds may not be a good sleeping option for them. Those who suffer from problems like arthritis, insomnia, lower back pain etc. sometimes suffer discomfort while using a normal / flat bed; for the rectification of their sleeping posture and a great solution for natural sound sleep an adjustable bed would be an ideal solution.

As suggested by the name adjustable beds come with an adjustability feature where the head and foot rest can be independently adjusted to achieve the desired comfort level of the user. This results in a comfortable night’s sleep and improved energy levels during the daytime. If comfort and your health are major concerns for you, an Adjustamatic bed could be the answer.

Patients suffering from arthritis or suffering from bone injury or fractures will gain immense benefits from adjustable bed use. Additionally, the patients of hairline fractures or waistline fractures will be able to lead comfortable lives while using an adjustable bed. Pregnant women at their advanced stages of pregnancy will also feel relief from recurring back and pelvic pain while using these beds.

Help to reduce the likelihood of night cramps

November 18th, 2010

Cramps which occur through the night can cause excruciating pain. These take place when a muscle contracts too hard, most likely in the calf or the small muscles within the foot. This contraction causes the muscle to spasm and the cramp pain can typically last for a few seconds to a few minutes. If cramps occur frequently, there are certain treatments to consider which may help;

Consider your diet

Low levels of potassium, calcium and magnesium is the cause for the majority of muscle cramps. Bananas are a rich source of potassium so eating these could help. Calcium is found in items such as green vegetables, dairy products, seeds and nuts where as magnesium is contained in green vegetables, seeds, nuts and dark chocolate. Make sure you include more of these minerals in your diet.

Stretching exercises

Try to stretch out the muscle affected by the cramps around three times a day, the last time just before you go to bed. If this helps to ease the cramps then try reducing the exercises to once or twice a day to see if the cramps hold off.

Adjustable beds

Medical research has proven that the use of an adjustable bed can ease the pain of night cramps. The flexibility of Adjustable beds allows sufferers to easily adjust and change their position frequently to help reduce night cramps and stiffness. The in-built massage therapy system, for both the beds and chairs, gently massages the affected muscles and provides significant pain relief.

Posture of your legs when in bed

Positions which prevent the calf muscles from contracting when you are sleeping could help reduce the chances of having night cramps. Try keeping the covers loose at the bottom of the bed so that your feet are not constricted in a certain position. You could also try lying on your back and propping your feet up with a pillow.

Effectively relieve the pain of Spinal Disorders

November 09th, 2010

The majority of the population in the UK are affected by neck or back disorders in their lifetime. Spinal disorders are primarily the result of structural or soft tissue injuries and degenerative or hereditary conditions. The following are practical ideas which could help to relieve the symptoms of spinal disorders;

Laughing

It provides the inside of the body with a natural massage. By changing your mood from unhappy to happy, it can help relieve aches and pains up to 30%.

Eating the correct foods

Sugary and processed foods contain toxins which do not always agree with the body and can contribute to the pain. Cutting out sugar and eating fruits and vegetables can make you feel mentally and physically better. Another possible factor could be dehydration of the body. By slowly increasing the amount of water you drink daily, the pain could be significantly reduced.

Physical activity

Exercise relieves stress and brings balance to your body. Introducing gentle exercise into your weekly routine causes the body to sweat, which is a very effective way to cleanse your body of the bad toxins. If exercise is initially too strenuous on the back, try going to a sauna and then developing a gradual exercise routine from there (even if it’s just walking!).

Getting an adjustable bed

It is proven that getting an adjustable bed or recliner chairs can help to reduce pain and discomfort of spinal disorders. Adjustable beds are easier to get in and out of therefore the reduced movement helps prevent the tension on your spine. Adjustable beds have a built in Cyclo-Massage Therapy system which enhances blood circulation and allows for suppler muscles. Make sure you find an adjustable bed and mattress which are comfy for you.

Choosing the Right Mattress

October 06th, 2010

Choosing the right mattress is a very individual thing; a good quality mattress helps you sleep and gives you better support. A good mattress is worth investing in as it can last up to 10 years or more.

Mattresses are made from a variety of different materials and include everything from foam, air mattresses, water mattresses and pocket spring mattresses. There are also hybrids of different materials as manufacturers try to get the most by combining different types.

Foam mattresses have been around for over 60 years, they are primarily a piece of foam covered in a soft, comfortable fabric. Foam mattress have become more sophisticated over time and are usually light, full of spring and without protruding internal wires.

Pocket spring mattresses are a relatively recent innovation. Each spring works independently to respond to individual body weight. Pocket sprung mattresses have an integrated zero motion transfer effect which means you or your partner can move and turn around without causing mattress movements.

Aveon Mattress from Adjustamatic

The Aveon mattress blends pocket spring technology with “Space Age” foam to provide a pressure relieving mattress. The Aveon mattress utilises visco elastic foam (Reflexion®) which was originally developed by the U.S. space programme. This foam has unique energy-absorbent capability so it accepts pressure without creating upward force and therefore relieves pressure on joints.

The Aveon mattresshas an insulating layer between the pocket spring and the supporting foam to provide extra flexibility. Compact pocket springs in a barrel shaped profile for flexing and extra support. The sheer density of springs enhances the body moulding process and further reduces pressure on the joints; cushioning vulnerable shoulders, pelvis, hips, ankles and heels. The mattress then moulds and re-moulds to your body’s contours.

Visit Aveon mattress for more information about Adjustamatic’s innovative, pressure relieving mattress.

Early Treatment Prescribed for Rheumatoid Arthritis

September 27th, 2010

Last week The British Science Festival in Birmingham heard how Rheumatoid Arthritis can be slowed down or even halted if it is caught early enough. Rheumatoid Arthritis is an immune disorder that affects 350,000 people in Britain and is three times more likely to affect women than men.

Karim Raza, from Birmingham University, said rheumalogists, with the support of the National Health Research, are gathering evidence about the advantages of diagnosing rheumatoid arthritis early, in preparation for launching a public campaign.

Often sufferers of rheumatoid arthritis don’t realise that the condition can be treated beyond pain relief and management or think that it is too minor to go to their doctor about. According to scientists at The British Science Festival, Rheumatoid Arthritis should be treated as urgently as cancer; if the onset of RA is treated early enough the disease can often be controlled or even halted.

If caught within the first three months, the auto-immune process responsible for rheumatoid arthritis can be targeted with drugs before it causes severe and permanent damage to the joints and other parts of the body. The disease doesn’t just affect joints and according to Dr Raza, “People with rheumatoid arthritis typically die 10 years younger from premature heart disease,”.

The early symptoms of RA are a swelling across the knuckles and sometimes the toe joints. These joints become painful and stiff, particularly first thing in the morning. The aim of the public campaign is to raise awareness of the condition so they can be diagnosed and treated earlier, “We need to raise awareness of the seriousness of the condition among the general public so they get quick access to the care they need, and which can make such a difference to the outcome of their disease,” Dr Karim Raza said.

How to get a good night’s sleep

August 18th, 2010

Many of us suffer from insomnia at some point in our lifetime. Some people can suffer with this problem for years whereas others can through phases of weeks or months.

The causes of insomnia can vary from stress at work and financial worries to medical conditions such as back pain. Insomnia can lead to further medical conditions if not treated; a lack of sleep can lead to high blood pressure and heart disease.

Sleep deprivation can lead to a decrease in alertness and memory loss. Sleep is a vital activity for mind and body to function at its best. It is not only the amount of sleep you get that is important but also the quality of that sleep.
There are several methods out there for treating insomnia and we’ve out together our top tips for achieving a good night’s sleep naturally.

Develop a routine

This means getting up and going to bed at the same time every day, even at the weekends. Developing a routine will help get your body into a sleep habit, conditioning you body to follow a regular pattern.

Avoid caffeine and alcohol:

Caffeine and alcohol should be avoided at least four hours before going to bed. Caffeine is a stimulant that will prevent you getting to sleep. Alcohol may cause you to feel sleepy but will affect the quality of sleep.

Avoid sleeping during the day

Sleeping during the day can exacerbate the problem as it will make it less likely that you’ll be able to get to sleep later on.

Create a quiet environment

Ensure there is no television, laptop or any other electronics in your bedroom that create a noise. Your bedroom should be a haven, away from everyday noises and stresses.

Get enough exercise

Exercise is a crucial part of a healthy lifestyle and will help you to get a better night’s sleep as it helps to relieve stress and will increase tiredness. However, exercise should be avoided 3-4 hours before you go to bed as it will increase your body’s core temperature and prevent you from falling asleep.

Choose the right bed

A comfortable and supportive bed can help to promote healthy sleep patterns and reduce the risk of your sleep being interrupted. An adjustable bed can aid sleep as it allows you to adjust your bed into a comfortable position to suit you. Adjustamatic’s built-in cyclo massage therapy system provides a deep, soothing massage aiding a deep and relaxing night’s sleep. Your choice of mattress can also affect your sleep pattern, the aveon mattress has pressure-relieving properties utilises compact pocket springs to provide support and comfort.
